Bucharest: New Protests Expected

Over ten thousand workers from the National Union Block (BNS) are expected to march today in Bucharest, in protest over the austerity measures enforced by the government. Today’s rallies come after a week of demonstrations, in which police officers, fire fighters, doctors, paramedics and public workers have voiced their anger at the pay cuts of 25% imposed by the executive, at the request of the IMF. Last week’s protests resulted also in the resignation of the minister of the Interior, Vasile Blaga, after several police officers rallied outside the President’s Palace in Bucharest threw their helmets at the Palace walls and shouted irreverentious slogans.
