Making Love Instead of War: Military Wedding in Afghanistan

They met 6 years ago, while in training to become officers. They had a little girl together and then they decided it’s time to go to war. And in Afghanistan they got married, both under arms. Second lieutenant Diana Elena Macovei didn’t have to shop around much for her bride’s outfit. In fact, she wore the same combat gear as the groom – second lieutenant Alexandru Iulian Ilie – and as the rest of the wedding guests.

No wedding gown, no alcohol and not very much of “Here Comes the Bride”. Their marriage was signed and sealed quickly and then the bride and the groom, instead of a wedding night together, returned to their units, several dozens of miles apart, to tend to their duties as soldiers.
