EU: Roma Integration Money Under Scrutiny

There will be an inquest into the way Romania and other countries spent their share of EU funds meant to help integrate the Gipsies – this announcement was made by the European Commissioner for Labour and Inclusion, Laszlo Andor, in Romania. Romania has so far spent 30 million Euros from European funds for the integration of its estimated 2 million Gipsy population – although official census figures only reveal a Roma population of half a million in Romania.

The European Commission has created, in September, a special committee whose mission is to verify the way European money meant to help with the integration of Gipsies are spent. The media have revealed many times that, at least in Romania, projects to help the Roma become part of society that were reported completed were actually achieved on paper – and the money was pocketted by various NGOs or government agencies.
