Teacher to End 70 Days Hunger Strike

“I won’t be a martyr and this is endangering my life”, said Cristina Anghel, the 51 years old Romanian primary school teacher, onher 68th day on hunger strike. She announced that she will resume a normal diet starting on Monday, the 1st of November.

Mrs. Anghel went on hunger strike in August, in protest of the Romanian government’s announced pay cuts of 25 percent, made at the request of the IMF. Her name was mentioned in Parliament by opposition leaders, as the same government was facing a vote of no confidence earlier this week.

Several other teachers in Romania have also gone on hunger strike, in support of Mrs. Anghel. She said that she will not influence their decision on whether to continue or to cease their protest, as it is entirely up to them.
