Prank Emergency Calls to Be Charged

A 33 Euro cent plus VAT charge is to be applied in Romania for every false call to the emergency service 112. The new rule is to be enforced starting February 2011 and it comes with a full set of measures aimed at countering a nationwide frenzy of fake emergency calls in Romania.

Among other measures, those who initiate more than 6 fake calls within 24 hours will be barred from using the system. They will first be warned by a recorded message that they face a prison sentence before being put through to an operator.

In Romania, the all time prank emergency call record is being held by Mădălin Udrea, 24, from Ialomiţa, the author of 6442 such calls in just 42 day. In one of those days, he called the emergency number 487 times just to throw profanities at the operators.
