Hundreds of birds died in Romania, for the second time in a month

Hundreds of dead or agonizing crows have brought terror to a town in the Eastern part of Romania. Since Saturday, the locals of Roman, a town of 80.000 people, have noticed that hundreds of crows fell to the ground dead or in agony in one of the local parks. On Monday, dozens of birds were struggling with death, unable to fly. Local experts suspect that the crows may have been poisoned, but no verdict can be given before a forensic study is conducted.

Some three dozens starlings have also been found dead in Constanţa, by the Black Sea, in Romania, on January the 8th. Veterinarians concluded that the starlings died of cold and alcohol intoxication.

Massive Boycott Against Petrol Stations in Romania

Romanian motorists' final bid: complete boycott

Thousands of motorists are expected to withhold from refueling for three days in Romania, starting on Monday, the 17 of January and ending on Wednesday, the 19th. This is the Romanian’s latest attempt to persuade petrol retailers to curb their prices, which are the highest in the European Union – in a country considered to be among the EU’s poorest.

For several weeks, motorists have been paying in pennies for their petrol purchases, in protest, after makins sure that they only filled up with just one litre of fuel in as much time as possible. The prices of petrol in Romania have increased by 30 percent since 2009, although a decrease in demand has been noted by 15 percent in just 2010.

Killer Nuns Get Parole

Three of the four Romanian nuns convicted for the murder of another novice in 2005 have been released from prison, on good behaviour. In 2005, the four nuns and the priest Daniel Corogeanu, from the Tanacu monastery in Vaslui, Romania, crucified 22 years old novice Irina Cornici for three days with no food, nor water, in a bid to “rid her of demons”. The girl was suffering from schyzophrenia and her symptoms were considered by the priest a form of “demonic possession”. The priest received a 7 years sentence, while for of the nuns were convicted to a five years term each. They all claim, to this day, that they were just “serving the will of God”. The priest is up for release by January 2012.

Woman “Back From the Dead” After Two Weeks’ Coma

A 30 years old woman from Romania has made an unexpected recovery, after having been in a deep coma for 14 days and declared “clinically dead”. Loredana Jalbă, from Galaţi, Romania, was the victim of a freak accident, after a piece of rubble falling off an old building hit her in the head just before Christmas 2010.

French Family Buys Gipsy Child from Romania in Installments

A Gipsy couple from Romania was arrested on Monday evening by the special Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office, under charges of human trafficking. According to the investigators, the couple had agreed to sell on of their children to a French family, while in France, in the year 2004. The price agreed was 5.000 Euros and the buyers allegedly paid it in installments. While the last part of the sum was being paid, the prosecutors came and arrested the couple. They face a sentence of 20 years in prison and a judge is expected to rule on their arrest warrants on Tuesday.

Cheeky Gabriela Explains “Shoplifting Incident”

In an exclusive interview on Romanian TV channel PRO TV, on Monday, Cheeky Gabriela gave her account of the “shoplifting” incident that occured in Britain.

“We had had a meeting on Tuesday about a part in a gangster movie in which we (the Cheeky Girls) were to play the leading parts. We got our scripts and then Gabriela went away for a few days to visit her boyfriend. She read the script and, on Friday, she took a break. She went to the store, bought a salad for which she paid and then she realized that she had forgotten to also buy a bottle of apple juice. She took the bottle and then she left”, tells Monica, Gabriela’s sister, interviewed as a guest on PRO TV’s “Happy Hour” talk show.

“I exited the store without realizing what I had done. It struck me that I hadn’t paid when the security guard came running after me. Things got even more serious when the police arrived. I am ashamed, but I didn’t do it on purpose. It was a bottle of juice that costs 2 pounds”, added Gabriela, also a guest at “Happy Hour”.

UPDATE: Romanian Starlings Died Because of Cold, Claim Forensics

The veterinarian pathologists who examined the dead bodies of the 32 starlings found dead on Saturday morning in Constanţa, Romania, have announced their verdict: the birds died because of the frost. “All the birds were dehydrated after the freezing weekdays that preceded. We found nothing in their stomach or in their goiters. The sterlings showed no symptoms”, stated Romeo Lazăr, the director of the Constanţa Sanitary-Veterinarian Direction. Further tests were to be conducted on Monday. A toxicology and a virus examination should eliminate any doubts about the birds’ deaths. Doctors do no think that the death of the starlings is in any way connected with the case of swine food and mouth disease recently discovered in neighbouring Bulgaria.

Foot and Mouth Disease Case in Bulgaria Causes Alert

Romania and Bulgaria are now in alert, after a dead boar was diagnosed with foot and mouth disease south of the Danube river, in Bulgaria. Eight Romanian counties are in high state of alert. Check points at the Romanian-Bulgarian border have been equipped with disinfectation equipment. Cars and people crossing the border are now subject to decontamination procedures. Animal exports have been completely banned both North and South of the Danube. Veterinarians are now spreading leaflets explaining to the people how to detect any sign of illness.

Dozens of Birds Misteriously Dead in Romania Within Miles of US Base

Around three dozens of dead starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) were discovered dead in Constanţa, a Romanian city by the Black Sea, within 15 miles from a US military base. On Saturday morning, local people living in the lighthouse area found the birds dead in the snow and in the branches of some trees. Local veterinarian authorities suspect that the birds may have been poisoned, but they will only be able to establish a final verdict after a toxicology examination of the corpses. The examination is scheduled for Monday. Romeo Lazăr, the director of the Sanitary-Veterinarian Direction of Constanţa supposes that the starlings might have eaten poisoned grain found by the rail track nearby. Local people found a suspicios looking empty bag near one of the buildings in the area. The dead birds have been collected and transported to the Sanitary-Veterinarian Direction of Constanţa, pending the examination. At about 15 miles from Constanţa, the US have a military airbase, by the Kogălniceanu airport.
